Comparison with the first film version is completely justified and unfortunately, the new adaptation significantly loses in terms of points, although the way the old farmer solves the mess with two criminal gangs on his land does not lack its charm. It's not so much that Mondy simply isn't Gabin and despite all efforts, he doesn't fit the role of a patriarchal, uncompromising farmer. The screenplay of the first version was more compact, straightforward, and simply cinematic, whereas the new version is more scattered, talkative, and overly plays on the string of sentiment.
