A Földrengések zongorahangolója újabb szabadjegy a Quay fivérek egyedi és misztikus mesevilágába. Friss alkotásuk költői tudományos-fantasztikus film, amelyet az argentin Adolfo Bioy Casares Morel találmánya című kisregénye inspirált - bár a végeredmény sokkal inkább emlékeztet Jules Verne Várkastély a Kárpátokban című kalandregényére. A történet hősnője Malvina, a híres operaénekesnő, akit esküvője előestéjén rabol el a megszállott Doktor Droz és a Kárpátokba hurcolja. Droz eldugott kastélyában különös zeneautomatákat épít, amelyhez egy mit sem sejtő ifjú zongorahangoló segítségét kéri.
