The story only promises a Hitchcock drama (the final unraveling confirms it for everyone) and has all the necessary properties for it, but it’s constantly getting in its own way, especially with poor humor or the overacting of some of the participants. So the result is a long, undemanding affair that they seem to be proud of in Sweden, having it restored so beautifully, but I'm afraid viewers elsewhere will tend not to appreciate it as much. For comparison, Czech crime dramas and Major Kalaš date back to roughly the same period, and The Lady in Black isn’t anywhere near as good.
