I don't know much about the original series, so I'm not sure if such a series really existed, or if this is a parody of it, but I would lean more towards the latter because there are jokes here that are sometimes very sharp and good. Overall, it's really good and quite crazy, and it brings back memories of an interesting time and makes fun of itself.
