I don't know the original series that well, so I'm not sure if it really existed or if this is still a parody of it. However, I would lean more towards the second option, because there are jokes here that are quite sharp and good. Overall, it's pretty cool and crazy, it reminds you of an interesting time and makes fun of itself.
