In 1918, when Estonia gained its independence, the most enthusiastic defenders of the new-born state were schoolboys. The film follows the 14 month long warpath of group of classmates in the middle of the decisive events of Estonia's history. Henn Ahas is one of these young men. He comes from a poor family and has to struggle to pay for his tuition and to afford food on the table. While his classmates join in corpore the defence forces and eagerly wait for first encounter with the enemy, Henn can't make up his mind and stays behind.

His home town becomes under attack. Together with his beloved girl Marta, a self-conscious young lady from a wealthy family, they narrowly escape the red militia. The time for Henn to make a decision has arrived. He joins his classmates and experiences fears and dangers of war. Enthusiasm of the boys is perhaps shattered, but they never lose faith in each other and in better future. The fulfilling of Henn's youthful dream is still far away and war has some bitter surprises awaiting. „Names in Marble" has achieved enormous audience success in Estonia by exceeding the admission numbers of all other local films as well as foreign releases.
