Akárcsak egy tündérmese: Desirée Clary (Jean Simmons), egy marseilles-i selyemkereskedő lánya a francia hadsereg legfiatalabb tábornoka, Bonaparte Napoleon első szerelme lett, majd egészen a svéd királyi trónig repítette sorsa. A történet 1774-ben indul Marseilles-ben. Desirée Clary kegyeiért nemesek és katonatisztek versengenek, de ő az ifjú Napoleonnal (Marlon Brando), a „korzikai szörnnyel" bonyolódik szenvedélyes szerelmi viszonyba. Desirée családja viszont ellenezte egy újabb Bonaparte beházasodását a Clary családba. Napoleon viszont gyorsan hűtlen lett hozzá, miután megismerkedett Joséphine de Beauharnais-val, a sokak által kurtizánnak tartott dúsgazdag ifjú özveggyel. A kétségbeesett Desirée az öngyilkosságba menekül és éppen Napoleon jobkeze, Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte tábornok menteti meg attól, hogy a Szajnába vesse magát. A tábornok és Desirée összeházasodnak, és miközben Napoleon sorra aratja katonai sikereit és császárrá koronáztatja magát, Bernodette-et a svéd királyi pár adoptálja. 1818-ban Bernadotte herceget Svédország és Norvégia királyává koronázzák, Desirée királynőként pedig a máig is uralkodó dinasztia alapító tagja lett.
