Az "édes grundot" ésszel védi meg nagy csatában Boka tábornok és lelkes kis csapata a vörösinges túlerővel szemben. Nem sikerülne győzniük, ha az árulónak bélyegzett közlegény, a kis Nemecsek nem derítené ki a gazdag Geréb árulását, vállalva ezért a megalázó hideg fürdőket is. A csata döntő pillanatában már minden veszni látszik, amikor megint ő menti meg a helyzetet: félájultan dönti le a lábáról a szabálytalanul harcoló vörösinges vezért, Áts Ferit. Nemecsek halálos ágyánál ott tiszteleg mindkét csapat. De hiába a győzelem, a grundon nagy építkezés kezdődik. (Mokép)

My expectations were more than high, but Fábri exceeded them many times over. The film works flawlessly both historically, as it beautifully depicts a childhood community at the beginning of the last century, with its righteous hierarchy and instilled code of honour and respect for authority (something we can only dream of today), and as a metaphorical resistance against the violence of the adult world that never solves anything and makes terrible sacrifices for the sake of a meaningless victory. All the characters are extremely likeable, the narrative is fluid and fun, and the final battle with trenches, sand balls and elaborate strategy is something I always wholeheartedly dreamed of as a little lad with my friends in the village. By far the most beautiful Hungarian film.

Perhaps if I had seen the film for the first time as a child, it would have intrigued me more, but I guess something in me killed that childlike wonder, although it's true that I still love War of the Buttons. There are some scenes here that surprised me with their visual power, but the war over the playground itself didn't resonate with me as much.
