A Spanish filming crew arrives to Berlin in 1938 from the civil war that is turning to Franco´s victory, to UFA´s studios to shoot the co-production "The Girl of Your Dreams". The star of Andalusian musical, Macarena Granada (the ever so lovely Penélope Cruz) bewilders the order-loving Germans with her joyous temperament, and soon even third Reich´s cultural leader Joseph Goebbels falls for her head over heels. She finds him grotesque and repugnant though. The cat-and-mouse game has big stakes not only on the level of world politics, but also concerning production values. The line between fantasy and reality blurs even more as the Nazis introduce concentration camp prisoners as extras on the set, and Macarena falls in love with one of them. Through many cultural confrontations and collisions The Girl of Your Dreams combines elements of drama and comedy to the artificial reality of a film in the making. Somehow Macarena´s sly double role brings to mind Fassbinder´s Lili Marlene, whose title role actress Hanna Schygulla plays a supporting role also in The Girl of Your Dreams, as Goebbels´ wife Magda.
