What starts out as a gangster film spirals rapidly out of control when a young yakuza is ordered to assassinate his own superior, who also happens to be his closest friend. When his target disappears before he can do the job, he sets out for a search that leads him into a mysterious town filled with lowlifes, oddballs, and a cow-headed demon. Gozu focuses on a man who works for the mafia but is going crazy. He needs to be removed, which is not so easy. The film does not rely on an atmosphere of terror, but on the bizarre and strange. The characters that parade through here can really get under your skin because they are memorable, whether for good or bad reasons. Another example of how good Miike is, even if it doesn't suit everyone.
