The very young Dennis Hopper falls for a mermaid, but as soon he realizes this, she becomes a fatal attraction. However, you should not expect a terrifying rampage from the people of the sea, it is more of a melancholic romantic drama than a horror movie. The slow-moving story builds toward a deadly mystery and, with the music score by David Raksin which works really well, creates an almost hypnotic romantic movie, nicely wrapped up with a few verses by Edgar Allan Poe.
