A film Anglia utolsó női szerepeket alakító férfi színészének, Ned Kynastonnak a története. Ned (Billy Crudup) férfiként macsó, nőként díva. Desdemonaként tömegeket bolondít meg, Othellóként azonban kissé modoros és hiteltelen kezdetben. A sors iróniája, hogy pont öltöztetőnője, Maria (Claire Danes) lép a helyébe a színdarabban, majd segít neki, hogy mind a magánéletben, mind a színházban feleslegessé vált női énjétől megszabaduljon, miután II. Károly megtiltja, hogy a Shakespeare színdarabokban a női szerepeket is a férfiak alakítsák. (Film+2)
