1935, Arizona. A hadsereg modernizációs programja keretében megszüntetik a lovasezredet, kiszuperálják a lovakat. Douglas MacArthur tábornok parancsára Mexikóba hajtják őket, ahol végezni fognak a kiszolgált, de egészséges állatokkal. John Patrick Libbey a 3. lovasezred őrnagya és Marshall Buxton főhadnagy mindezt nem nézi tétlenül. Néhány emberükkel együtt négyszáz lovat kötnek el, és észak felé indulnak, hogy megmentsék az állatokat.
