After his cowhands desert him for a nearby gold rush, aging, leather-tough rancher Will Anderson (John Wayne) resorts to hiring 11 schoolboys to help him on a 400-mile cattle run. Setting off with the boys and an eloquent but equally tough black cook (Roscoe Lee Browne), Anderson must get his cattle to their destination while contending with the wilderness and a psychotic, vengeful ex-con (Bruce Dern) who is out to get him. John Wayne is a legend who starred in more than 170 films, but as it often happens, every legend must say goodbye in some way. I think the film "The Cowboys" would have been a perfect ending to his career, but he still made six more films, including returning to the character Rooster Cogburn, which he first portrayed in the film "True Grit". However, "The Cowboys" are a perfect example of how the departure of a man who meant everything to the Western genre, at least the American one, could look like. Without him, there would not be the prototype of an honorable man, without him, there would not be a person that generations could look up to. But everyone ages.
