I like the modern version of Kubrick's spectacle better in many ways. There is a lack of big acting stars who steal the film for themselves with their performances and hence the characters can be better exposed. Still missing, of course, is the insightful and generally more inventive treatment by the creators of the series Spartacus: Blood and Sand (Gods of Arena & Vengeance), but for a recap of the basic story without the mannerisms of the golden age of sandals, this Spartacus is perfect. Moreover, this version lacks the famous pathos on the cross.
