Meteor

A stunningly simple film with a commendable message. If a piece of asteroid is hurtling towards Earth, the Cold War simply has to go away, the superpowers will admit that there are dozens of nuclear warheads orbiting the planet, and after some coaxing they will point them all at the approaching boulder. At the time of its creation, it must have been a very pleasant, refreshing optimism. As for the special effects of Meteor... Well... Yes, in a few parts it doesn't look very expensive (for example, the opening credits are an unbelievable B-)... But! Scenes such as the one with the massive avalanche or the evacuation of Hong Kong, which is being hit by a huge tidal wave, are, on the other hand, handled to perfection and still have something to say. Not to mention what happens to New York later... I'll round up three and a half stars for the scene with Sean Connery's arrival at NASA, which is very strikingly reminiscent of any scene of Agent 007's arrival at Miss Monneypenny's office, for President Henry Fonda, and for the sympathetic Soviet expert Dr. Dubov.
