The commander of a failed 1928 Arctic airship expedition is remembering the events of the "Italia" airship flight, crash and subsequent rescue efforts. The "ghosts" of people involved in the events appear in his memories to assist him in determining his guilt in the affair. The reminiscences are mixed with the real action: the flight of the "Italia", the air rescue operation from Kings Bay airfield, the expedition of the "Krassin" ice-breaker. The Arctic is no place for a man... A powerful rescue epic with a much darker dimension thanks to the dream-like hallucinations. The first half drags on a little, but then the atmosphere begins to thicken. The most powerful scene is without a doubt when Amundsen discovers the wreckage of the Italia. Powerful shots of the icy wilderness and Morricone’s music give the picture much needed beauty surrounded by despair. The acting performances are excellent. The final verdict is a jab at humanity which is more than right. /// I watched the original Russian version.

A riveting international filmmaking collaboration with a number of extremely atmospheric and brilliantly filmed scenes. I've seen the two-hour version and I hope to get to the 195-minute version at some point, because this was a really sensational show. And Connery's final monologue... And that Morricone music... And that scene with the tomb... And all of it, really.
