A Primm család New Yorkba költözik, és a kis Josh szörnyen magányos. Unatkozik, társtalan, a nagy, új házban barangol, és a padláson ráakad egy kitömött krokodilra… akiről nagyon hamar kiderül, hogy egyáltalán nincs kitömve, csak a gazdája magára hagyta. Josh persze eltitkolja a család elől, hogy van egy potyalakójuk. Aztán persze lebukik, és meg kell harcolnia új barátjáért. De amikor már éppen a felnőttek is belenyugodnának, hogy ezentúl eggyel többen vannak, feltűnik a kroki régi gazdája, a nagyhangú, mesebeli Valenti úr, egy szomszéd pedig bosszúhadjáratot indít, mert szerinte nem való állat oda, ahol ember él.
