The Convert (2023)

angol Nice setting, a decent Guy Pearce and the nice bloody carnage (blood spurts surprisingly in a big way) at the end are the upsides. The downsides are the rather slow pace and the not very engaging story, but for one viewing it's fine. 55%

Twisters - Végzetes vihar (2024)

angol I went to see the new release of the week in theaters yesterday which is kind of being seen as a sequel to the 90's film Twister and it's not bad, but it didn't completely blow me away unfortunately. It was nice to see Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar Jones, who plays the sort of intelligent woman who figures everything out. Visually it's decent, I liked that it keeps things down to earth and there are no overblown CGI attractions or destruction, it's quite realistic, but there's not a lot of action and it could have been presented more impressively (there aren’t many buildings flying off, the body-count isn't high, either, and I expected the atmosphere to be a bit more unpleasant and intense). For me there were a few deaf spots, it doesn't have a very adrenaline pace and I wouldn't watch the film again, or I wouldn't mind at all if I kept the film until I got home, it wouldn't change the experience. Passable average and a plus for the fact that disaster movies don't come around much anymore, but maybe it's not my cup of tea. 6/10.

Motorosok (2023)

angol Pretty weak. Ironically, it's where the film should have started. Because it's not until the last 10 minutes that we find out that the gang is in full swing (prostitutes, drugs, murders), so what we wanted to see will be in the sequel, which won't come. So if it wasn't for the guy gangster shit, I was hoping to at least enjoy the bikes, but NOPE, even those are scarce here. Mainly, it deals with relationships. Tom Hardy and Austin Butler were good, but apart from one burnt down pub and an “almost” rape, nothing interesting happened for two hours, and after the promising trailer, I see that as underwhelming. I didn't completely suffer, but then I'm not happy with the outcome either. At least the cameos of more familiar faces will be nice. 5/10.

Beomjoedosi4 (2024)

angol The best and most acclaimed Korean franchise of our time, which maintains its quality standard for the fourth time! This time we have online gambling and Filipinos who like to swing knives. I found the storyline weaker than the previous episodes, but the action is again great and there is quite a lot of it. Don Lee is brilliant again, everyone flies two meters away and his fists are just awesome. The villain is good too; by the way, every episode of this series has a great villain and each time from a different Asian country and this Filipino with the knife does some very nice stunts, all the knife sequences have great choreography, he's very dangerous and makes some decent trouble. I really enjoyed the final fight on the plane. All in all, a great action ride with top visuals, a great Don Lee and amazing action, you just love it here or not. 8/10.

Des Teufels Bad (2024)

angol Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz may be among the best directors in Austria, but their work is very art/slowburn, so they rarely hit my taste and this time it was again only halfway. There's an interesting period setting in the 18th century where traditions, rituals and rules were quite cruel and harsh. As a period historical drama it works quite well, but there are very few characters and unfortunately it doesn't try to tell a more interesting story and occasionally the filmmakers spice it up with a slightly more unpleasant scene, but it never really packs a punch (they could have easily shown that rape!!), the pace drags, nothing much happens (the main first hour is exhausting), so the rating is definitely decided for me. I was most impressed with the final ritual, it was decently sick, but nothing memorable. 5.5/10.

Beverly Hills-i zsaru: Axel Foley (2024)

angol That was really bad. It's been a long time since I've seen a movie that didn't have anything that interested me. The humour is completely off, the action is terrible (on the one hand, there's not enough of it and on the other hand, it sucks), Eddie Murphy is an actor who is long past his zenith so I found him annoying and unlikeable, I have no connection to the franchise so the nostalgia level didn't work for me, the story is weird and uninteresting, the only thing that's enjoyable are the cameos by famous actors, but that's about it. When I compare it to, for example, Bad Boys: Ride or Die, where the awesome R-rated action, the soundtrack, the actors and the humour work, this is very much a downgrade. Not for me. 3/10.

Ur mörkret (2024)

angol This anticipated Swedish atmospheric horror film ends up being just a decent genre flick after the gripping trailer, but I was expecting simply more. A search for a missing woman in a natural Swedish reserve with Nordic folklore and superstitions about a cave fairy sounded great on paper, but the result is so hard to classify. It's got decent visuals, it doesn't look cheap (that's important), the setting is fine (a cave), the atmosphere is decent in places and there were some murders, although you can't expect any gore. The scares here are too few for my taste and I didn't find them entirely functional. It's half ghost story, half slasher, but it just doesn't really go to the core on any level to pull me in or make me jump out of my seat with a scene. Luckily it doesn't get boring and the mythology is quite functional. Too bad the ending doesn't say anything; if it had a proper finale I'd probably be willing to go higher, this way only for a better three stars. Worth a try. 6/10.

A figyelők (2024)

angol To my surprise, this actually turned out okay. Shyamalan's daughter definitely beats Cronenberg's daughter. Visually, the film is on par, I liked the mythology around the guardians. The first encounter with them has a great mysterious atmosphere and visually it is properly engaging in short nicely photographed creatures. The film also offers some interesting twists – the one at the end got me quite a bit. It held my attention and that's what counts. It's more of a mystery horror tale than proper horror, and there are quite a few horror sequences, but I found the idea as a whole to be fine and imaginative, so I'm happy to give it 4 stars. 7/10.

In a Violent Nature (2024)

angol My impressions after watching. Decent and delicious (I wouldn't be angry if there was twice as much), there are only about five gore scenes, which is not much considering that the film is based on that, but they are good, and I think nothing will beat the scene with the hook this year, it was a fatality like from Mortal Kombat! I also liked the original perspective of the killer and the 80's atmosphere, I liked the overall look of the main mutant, who also uses interesting weapons and the kills are just nice and creative (he has a knack for cutting heads in different ways). The fact that there is no plot, no supporting characters and no dialogue is to be expected, what disappointed me a bit is the finale. In the last fifteen minutes the film turned into a talky drama, and where Chris Nash should have really leaned in and added to the carnage, he took his foot off the throttle and it ends so blandly. Too bad, it's like a 3.5, but I'll give a reluctant 4 stars in the end because gore is my thing and the look of the killer is original. Now it would like Scream from the perspective of the killer please ! :) 65%

Hang nélkül: Első nap (2024)

angol I'm sorry but this is pretty weak. The first two episodes are great adrenaline and nerve-wracking rides, but what worked there doesn't work here at all. The change of director is very much felt, you can also feel the change of the main characters, John Krasinski, Emily Blunt and Cillian Murphy are better actors than Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn (who is a dork). Visually it's still great, the monsters are great again but the awkward atmosphere of going from silence to extreme volume is low, and maybe only one jump-scare? There's no downright memorable scene like the birth from the first film or the bear trap from the second, I was kind of hoping for a more global and epic take on that world and it's just a melodrama about two people who don't really talk just stare at each other for more than half the movie. There's no story, there's almost no dialogue, I missed the interesting rules that were dealt with last time, there's just nothing here. When the monsters aren't exactly on screen (and they really aren't very often), it's a pretty yawn-inducing borefest where somewhere towards the end I thought it might be over by now, and please, the movie is only 90 minutes long. What also annoyed me was that nobody really screams, there's no proper confrontation with the monsters. They all just run away stupidly. MEH and the fact that the cat doesn't even meow or growl once, I didn't understand why either. Weaker than average. I'm leaving the cinema after a long time feeling like it wasn't worth the money. Three stars really just to respect the franchise and that not many of these monster movies are made, but emotionally I'm definitely more on two. 5/10.
