Slaxx (2020)

angol The expected killer jeans are just average after all. The advantage is that the film is only 80 minutes long, so you don't have to wait much for anything, and the jeans start rampaging from the 10th minute. The story centers on the employees of a clothing store who are in lockdown and a new collection of jeans is out for blood. It's shot, original and fairly entertaining, although the characters are rather unlikeable, the entire fashion community feels like some kind of brainwashing cult, so you just look forward to their execution. It could have been saved by the gore, which when it did happen was excellent, but out of the fifteen characters most of the murders are off camera. But there are three or four gore scenes that are really cool, though I don't really understand why they didn't show all of them, I would have gone higher with the rating for sure. The humuor didn't work for me, so as a comedy the film fails. I was expecting more, but for the original idea, short running time and four decent murders, Slaxx gets 3 stars from me. 5.5/10.

Peopling (2019)

angol Decent perversion for a fringe audience! A short eight-minute film set in a twisted household where the weird main character, who is more or less an overgrown child, accidentally creates his doppelganger and competes with it for his mother's favour. Madness that will not be easily forgotten, it's extremely weird, but it served its purpose! 8/10.

Hello, Mr. Billionaire (2018)

angol I'm not a big fan of comedies from China, but this one is a blast with an original idea. The protagonist is the goalkeeper from a not so well known football team, whose very wealthy uncle dies and to inherit his fortune he has to earn it first. He is tasked with spending one billion in 30 days, with the stipulation that at the end of the month he must not own any property, must not tell anyone and must not have even 1 yuan left over, if he makes it he will inherit 30 billion. A very entertaining movie where while watching you think about how you would spend the money and in the end it's not that simple. The main character gets into some tricky situations at times because of this, and his accountant is excellent, constantly admonishing him not to spend so much. The comedic highlight probably came at a football match, there I was crying with laughter. Really great. 8/10.

Lucky (2020)

angol Pretty disappointing. According to the trailer, Lucky with a home invasion with a time loop, but in the end it's completely different, it’s not even a horror movie but a social satire full of metaphors from the #Metoo era about how women have it hard in life. Poor women. Directed, of course, by feminist Natasha Kermani. On the one hand, the film is original; on the other hand, it's kind of useless because everything that happens is weird, every minute you have more questions, and when the end comes you feel like jumping out the window because they don't explain absolutely anything to you because they don't know it themselves. Aside from the fact that nothing is explained, almost nothing makes sense, the killer doesn't really try – he could have killed the protagonist at any time, but he is fighting for women's rights, isn't he? They could have done a nice job with the gore here, there were countless possibilities, but the murders are more reminiscent of PG-13 thrillers from 2000s. The only scene that stood out to me was the one in the garage, but that seems woefully lacking. Unfortunately, it's not suspenseful, atmospheric, or brutal. It was filmed quite OK and I was willing to go for three stars while watching it until the ending, which ruined the whole thing. The higher percentage on tomatoes the less horror, that's already already clear. 4/10.

Szextúra (2008)

angol A great comedy from the days when Americans were still doing cool stuff. It's a bit like American Pie, and it's funny and crazy enough. I enjoyed the nudity, the decent wisecracks, the nice pacing, and James Marsden as an assassin. I had a good laugh. 8/10.

The Look-See (2017)

angol Decent short in the toilets with a nice villain and two decent scares. The atmosphere could be cut with a knife during those three minutes. 7/10.

Raya és az utolsó sárkány (2021)

angol A fascinating Disney movie. Thematically, it's much closer to me than anything from Pixar (Soul, Inside Out). It has a very Asian style and takes a lot from Japanese culture. Raya is a beautiful shinobi, has a weapon straight out of “Dark Souls”, and is very capable in combat. The story is fine, maybe not very original, but it's exactly the kind of stuff I'm looking for. I mean, there's a lot of traveling and collecting pieces of dragonstone from various attractive locations, and I enjoyed the variety of the tribes and the different dangers. I liked that she recruits new members along the way as well. The visuals are breathtaking, the animation is almost unbeatable, the music is brilliant, the action is excellent, though I expected a little more (especially more puzzles, traps as in the opening), but I'll survive. The humour is good too, taken care of by the water dragon, and overall it's a very nice fantasy entertainment that puts a smile on your face. Disney has outdone Pixar in my eyes. 8/10.

Shookum Hills (2021)

angol The director of Chernobyl Diaries did not raise much hope and made a film similar in quality, perhaps even worse. The only thing that can be praised is the setting of the Appalachian Mountains and the underground coal mine, where rather than monsters there are some fairly decent mutants with pretty faces, and I liked the main character that looks like Lara Croft, but that's about it. It's awkwardly shot, has that cheap shabby 90s look to it, and the camera not only shakes quite a lot – at times I felt like the director was perhaps trying to switch to found footage style – but also frequently dodges to cover up the cheap budget. So you don’t even realise that half the people are already dead. The gore is mostly nonexistent, the atmosphere tries but doesn't work too well, and even though it has a lighter touch of Wrong Turn and Silent Hill in places, it's woefully uninteresting and kind of pointless. This is not very good. 4/10.

A francia őrszem (2021)

angol Julien Leclercq is a kind of French action routinier. His films aren't downright bad, but they also hardly ever impress. The story this time is simple, Olga Kurylenko is out to get revenge on the Russians for raping her sister, and luckily she has military training so she's not a complete wimp. I don’t mind that it doesn't have a strong or interesting story, what bothers me more is that the action is sparse (two short fights and one big shootout). Also, it's not very brutal, almost not at all except for two gory shots. The fights are pretty good, they are rough, the camera is clear and Olga is good to look at, especially when she shows up naked, and there is some decent lesbian sex. I expected much more from the French, but I wasn't bored, the film passes quickly thanks to its 80 minutes running time and I don't mind these B-action movies if they are at least well made, I enjoy them more than any drama. 5/10.

Ji hun (2021)

angol Highly praised abroad, maybe even overhyped for my taste. The film is more or less a traditional crime drama with mystery elements, where a mysterious murder is investigated. Everything is more or less in order – the actors, the visuals and the original story with a touch of mysticism – but unfortunately I wasn't really into it. The film had a hard time getting my attention, maybe because there are not many murders and I didn't find the investigation very engaging. The final twist is surprising, but they will have to settle for a better average from me. A similar problem as with Knives Out, I don't enjoy this kind movies. 6/10.
