Vojta Lavička: Nahoru a dolů (2013)

angol A passage of time documentary involving an interesting environment and the truly colorful life of Vojta. There is a lot going on in the documentary which makes it all the more unfortunate that some of the essential issues are touched upon only marginally. The movie feels protracted as irrelevant topics are discussed or long shots occur without dialog.

Privát univerzum (2011)

angol A rather uninspiring and monotonous way of working with the material. The whole movie just revolves around the father sleepily reading aloud or watches the eldest son, who is simply a slacker and does not have much to offer. It bothered me that the mother of the family was only given very little space at the end of the movie, and the daughters didn't seem to exist at all. I like documentaries that follow a passage of time in the lives of ordinary people enjoy their fates whatever they are, but Private Universe did not suit me overall.

Fontos vagy nekem (2020)

angol An unusual subject, the great R. Pike, excellent costumes, and all to the sound of a perfect soundtrack. The only thing that stopped me from giving it the highest rating was the relatively predictable plot (including the ending), but it didn't spoil the fun for a moment. There are wonderful scenes that give you the chills or make you laugh. I am glad that the creators were able to make the best of such an imaginative subject.

Egy házasság története (2017)

angol The relatively exceptional and unconventional life of one family, which is brilliantly captured over a period of time. You get everything In this documentary – family, love, relationship crises, educational crises, separation, several weddings, a happy ending. The Strnads have a unique family charm that is a joy to watch. At the same time, their life development and diligence will hopefully bring them great satisfaction. I am glad that they shared their story with the public and I also compliment Helena Třeštíková, who once again proved the quality of her on-going work.

A végállomás gyermekei (2021) (sorozat)

angol Firstly, I have to clarify that this is my first experience with children from Bahnhof Zoo. The cult book and the movie are still waiting for me. And honestly, I'm glad that's the case. I simply watched a new and excellent story that is brilliantly shot, without unnecessary comparisons and without looking at distracting details to see what I can criticize compared to the original. It would have robbed me of the experience I had. So it doesn't stick to the original book? And why should it? In each episode, it is clearly stated that it is a loose inspiration and it is not the intention of the series to copy the book. The story is strong and I am glad the creators decided to dust it off for younger viewers. It's a work of high quality, from the acting performances (as though all the characters were tailored to the actors), to the cinematography, the colors, the scenery, and the outstanding music. It is the more contemporary songs that fit stylistically into the whole concept of how the series is conceived and portrayed, and I really enjoy how the seventies are portrayed. I devoured every episode of this series and I will be happy to return to it again sometime.

Řekni mi něco o sobě - Láďa (1993)

angol When they are behind bars they are constantly hoping and whining for freedom, and when they finally get out they don’t go through with any of the things they claimed they would do. They enjoy homeless bohemianism, they don't want to get a job, and eventually they end up back in jail and start up the same old song and dance all over again. A documentary that, thanks to Láďa and Dana, spins in circles and does not move anywhere. The finale is clear - he remains locked up for a long time, she disappears and no family happiness awaits them.

Řekni mi něco o sobě - Pavlína (1992)

angol The life of drug addicts is always interesting and attractive. It is engaging to follow their choices and see where their life story takes them. Pavlína and Roman were in a similar situation. They also start out in prison like the other subjects of this series, but unlike the others, they don't return regularly (except once) and they truly try to lead ordinary honest lives. The terrible thing is that they have no motivation and they desperately need someone to guide them and keep them safe. In a way, they are still children who have no idea how to behave in an adult world. I like the evolution they go through when their child is born and they abstain from taking drugs, and how terrible they feel when the child is taken away from them. This story would be interesting to watch unfold over a few more years. I wonder how they are doing today.

Řekni mi něco o sobě - Martin (1994)

angol A well-made TV documentary telling the story of young Martin who, at the age of 16, finds himself on the very border between legality and illegality. This is really rather similar to how René’s life panned out. He always looks forward to freedom and a new start, but then ends up back in prison within a month. At the beginning at least he tries to lead an honest life, but then a quick and easy buck always gets the better of his good intentions. His spiritual journey to find God is an interesting aside here, but in the end his words turn out to be empty, like his own character - no goals or ambitions.

René - Egy élet a rácsok mögött (2008)

angol Another great documentary project from Helena Třeštíková; I love her work. René’s story has potential and gets off to a good start. But unfortunately, due to the actions of the main protagonist, it doesn’t go anywhere much and we don’t see much more that the bars and the four walls of his cell. René is a hopeless case and I couldn’t believe how many chances he needed to make something of himself. Due to his behavior, you come away with a bland and stagnant taste in y our mouth after watching this documentary. So although the end result is a well-made documentary, it is just a mediocre and easily-forgettable story.

Sarlatán (2020)

angol A powerful story about an exceptional person and his cruel fate. It’s a great experience watching both Agnieszka Holland’s outstanding work and the two main protagonists in action. It’s good that this story inspired by real life has been given some space, reminding viewers of a time that mustn’t be forgotten. That people are a nasty species and that love shouldn’t be forbidden. And lastly, I would like to praise how she works with life and the great screenplay.
