Aki a pofonokat kapja (1924)

angol A beautiful work by Victor Sjöström with a theme as old as mankind itself. While at home in Sweden he captivated with Ingeborg Holm and The Phantom Carriage, while in America he got Lon Chaney for a role that had already been certified to Valdemar Psilander and Gunnar Tolnæs, and later to Emil Jannings. The story of He Who Gets Slapped is about the fall of an intellectual to the bottom of the circus ring. After losing his illusions, his career and his beloved wife, Paul Beaumont becomes an attraction. A young love blossoms naturally around him between the artists - the over-sweet Norma Shearer and the tender John Gilbert... It is an excellent film with great performances and an ageless message. It is encounters like this that only strengthen my faith in the "great silent miracle of the silver screen."

Hollywood revü (1929)

angol A delightful revue party hard, definitely dominated by two sequences in two-band Technicolor. A film that talks, sings, and dances! Also, it makes fun of Romeo and Juliet! Baby Norma Shearer and her boy John Gilbert or Capulet and Montague! It’s the same tricks as always and of course the jovial typical humor.

Pravda Fairaizlova (2005)

angol The Fairaizl phenomenon is a topic that is not often mentioned, and that is a shame. For all those interested in the development of television in the Czech Republic, it is practically a must. Unfortunately, however, those interested in more detailed information about Fairaizl projects are referred to the encyclopedic entry, as there are no descriptions and no list of examples in the end credits, which is a rather significant defect.

Proč? (1964)

angol I'm classically traumatized. A gender-fragile theme told with Schorm-Špáta poetics. Again the grotesqueness where it didn't need to be, and again the statements of ordinary people who lose their train of thought in the middle of a sentence. The ethics are still of course the same, as are the reasons. And if I believed that today's generation is any wiser, that would be very naive of me.

Něžná revoluce (1989)

angol Boris Rösner's narration elevates the aesthetic qualities of the documentary, while the rest is of purely archival value.

Prága szeme (2010)

angol What more can I say? An attractive case handled by a couple of women who had no problem being right in the thick of it. The result is a pleasantly clear documentary mapping a topic that has affected the Czech media space for two years.

Jan Saudek - V pekle svých vášní, ráj v nedohlednu (2007)

angol "Art is bullshit. Let's stick to that." A controversial work in its time, today it is just an ordinary puzzle piece of the Jan Saudek puzzle. Jan is a person who deserves his share of attention, so let's not deny him it. Even if it had taught us nothing else than that beauty has many forms, that would have been enough to record it in our memories.

Karel Zeman, a filmkalandor (2015)

angol A nice documentary matching the reputation of the activities around the Karel Zeman Museum. Here and there we get an interesting observation, a conveyed love of the subject, and interesting period material. The attempt to repeat some of the special effects sequences also works as a distraction. The only major mistake is the classic performance of the arrogant Kamil, who sometimes says inappropriate things.

A vörös cárnő (1934)

angol Masochistic aesthetics in all its developed glory. Hollywood Baroque. Or Catherine II's life journey to the top, defined by her tenderly decadent sexuality. "It is easier for you to scream without a straw in your mouth."

The NeverEnding Story (1995) (sorozat)

angol A very simple animated version of Ende's The Neverending Story. The target audience is even younger children than those for whom the live-action series is intended. But that's absolutely fine because anyone who likes to spend time in Fantasia will enjoy these stories too. In addition, the main villain is Xayide, and that's great. The scripts are not stupid and the new encounters with the child empress or the stone family are delightful. And then, when the kids grow up, you can offer them movies and a book as a follow-up to the basics of the classics.
