He is a film director and scriptwriter. He studied actor’s directing with José Luis Borau (Cali, 1981) and Photography Direction with Michael Balhaus (Medellín, 1982). He is a doctor Honoris Causa in Social Communication and Journalism from the University of Antioquia, 2004. He is also a writer, especially poetry. He has been published ten poetry books and was awarded the National Poetry Prize Eduardo Cote Lamus, 1979, for the book Alguien en la Ciudad también Perplejo and the second prize at the National Poetry Award ‘Universidad de Antioquía’, 1979, for the book La Luna y la Ducha Fría. He started in cinema in 1979, making some amateur documentary and fiction short films. As a professional, he has made six medium length fiction films, among them: Los habitantes de la noche and Los músicos. In 1986 he shot his first feature film, Rodrigo D. No futuro, selected for official competition in Cannes Festival 1990. In 1998 he directed La vendedora de rosas, also presented in Cannes. The film received the award OCIC at Havana Festival.
