Sofia Coppola

Sofia Coppola, who started her film career as an actor, is the daughter of director and producer Francis Ford Coppola. She studied painting and photography but has thus far realized her artistic ambitions to her fullest potential as a director and screenwriter.

Her feature debut The Virgin Suicides (2000) was presented at Cannes in Directors' Fortnight. She received rave reviews (and an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay) for her second picture Lost in Translation (2003), a small-scale morose comedy about two lonely people who meet up in a Tokyo hotel.

The biopic Marie Antoinette (2006) premiered in the main competition at Cannes. Another bittersweet comedy from the writer-director, Somewhere (2010), won Venice's Golden Lion. The Bling Ring (2013), a crime story about a group of teenage burglars, was selected to open Cannes' Un Certain Regard.
