He founded a film club in his home town at an early age. Whilst studying at the University of Bristol, he directed a number of award-winning short films. His feature debut, Cinema, Aspirins and Vultures (2005), premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes and won the National Education Award in France. In 2009, I Travel Because I Have to, I Come Back Because I Love You premiered in Venice. His third feature, Once Upon a Time, Verônica (2012), received awards at San Sebastián and La Habana. His Joaquim (2017) screened in the Berlinale competition.
