Catalina Aguilar Mastretta was born in Mexico City in 1984. She graduated from Universidad Iberoamericana with a Bachelor's degree in communication science, with a minor in audiovisual media. Before completing her undergraduate degree, she spent a year at NYU's Tisch School of the arts studying film and television. In 2009 she attended the American Film Institute Conservatory where she obttained an MFA in screenwriting. During the course of her undergraduate studies she wrote and directed several short films, including Somewhere else (Winner Best Short Film at the Jewish New York Film Festival); La Cuesta (Winner best script Alucine Film Festival); and Tabacotla, which served as her undergraduate thesis film and was presented in festivals both in Mexico and abroad.In the following years, her work was primirily in writing, publishing essays and short stories in several publications. As a screenwriter her main credit is the serial historical show Gritos de muerte y libertad and the independent film Echo Park. Her script Drawing Maple was awarded the prestigious Fadiman award. The Hours With You is her first feature film.
