Maher Abi Samra (b. 1965, Beirut) studied at the Lebanese University in Beirut and at the Institut National de l'Image et du Son in Paris. His documentary WE WERE COMMUNISTS (2010) won the Black Pearl for Best Arab Documentary at the Abu Dhabi Film Festival and also participated in the Orizzonti Competition at the Venice Biennale. His filmography includes MERELY A SMELL (2007/doc.), WOMEN OF HEZBOLLAH (2000/doc.), BUILDING ON THE WAVES (1996/doc.) and CHRONICLE OF RETURNING (1995/doc.).
