George Melford

He was a stage and film actor, director, producer and screenwriter. Born to German immigrant parents (the name Melford was adopted for the stage), he graduated from McGill University in Canada then started working as an actor. In 1911 he co-directed his first short film, Arizona Bill, and from there went on to direct a series of successful features. He joined Universal Pictures, where he directed his first talkie in 1929, then went on to direct the Spanish version of Dracula in 1931, which he filmed simultaneously with the English version, taking over the same set at night, but using different actors.
