Matthew Gough trained at the University of Surrey in Music and Sound Recording. Following graduation from the Tonmeister course, he worked as an independent classical music engineer, producer, and editor for, amongst others, Decca, EMI and many other smaller labels. He then worked in post-production sound for film, beginning at post house Boom, working with Paul Hamblin. Shortly after, he moved on to De Lane Lea, gaining experience and working on high-profile film projects.

Whilst at De Lane Lea, he received a nomination for a BAFTA for his work with Walter Murch and Mike Prestwood-Smith on Cold Mountain. In 2005, he left De Lane Lea to pursue a freelance career as a Re-recording Mixer, Sound Supervisor and Director of Sound. Matthew Gough has worked all over the world on both large-scale films (The Brothers Grimm, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Cold Mountain) and smaller independent ones, including Anthony Minghella's Breaking and Entering and Lisa Gornick's Do I Love You?
