Támad a Mars!

NinadeLTámad a Mars!(1996)

angol One of those iconic 90s movies by Tim Burton, which I completely missed back in the golden era of VHS tapes and video rental stores. Looking back, it's obviously fun, but it's still just an adaptation of trading cards from the Topps company that never quite stepped out of its shadow. Some ideas and casting choices are indeed genius, but the whole thing drags. The micro stories of Lisa Marie, Danny DeVito, and Sarah Jessica Parker are excellent, but the best of all is the grandma played by the famous Hitchcockian actress Sylvia Sidney.

Aquaman és az Elveszett Királyság

NinadeLAquaman és az Elveszett Királyság(2023)

angol #15 DCEU. The final film of DC Extended Universe is the Aquaman sequel. The film runs smoothly, following the classic concept of a buddy movie, in which the main enemies from the first film become partners under the influence of circumstances, and together they fight against a new enemy. This is something absolutely ideal for a feel-good audience experience. Jason Momoa and Patrick Wilson have charisma to spare, the underwater world is very attractive to look at, and it's nice to perceive all the architectural ideas and fauna and flora. Something like this is always an interesting challenge for filmmakers, after all, the concept of Atlantis has been tempting for processing since ancient times. It must have been a feast for the eyes in the movie theater. Of course, I would have enjoyed more space for Amber Heard, Nicole Kidman, Temuera Morrison and Dolph Lundgren, but considering how long we waited for the film, the final form is more than decent. The first film was devoted to the duo Aquaman/Mera, the second one is about the duo Aquaman/Orm.

Pókok

NinadeLPókok(2023)

angol A very weak, generic genre film. A group of young adults are trapped in a spider's web along with the entire residential building due to one single mistake. In the place I watched it, they really tried hard and placed artificial spider webs and spiders, but that's pretty much all that can be remembered positively about it.

A majmok bolygója: A birodalom

3DD!3A majmok bolygója: A birodalom(2024)

angol Apes strong together... With Caesar's passing came the necessary long exposure. The new hero Noah, the new heroine Nova, and of course family and friends. Funny sequences about the foul odors of human females alternate with themes of artificial evolution. Knowledge and technology vs symbiosis with nature is beautifully sketched out and could use more elaboration, but there's no time. Wes Ball is building the fertile ground for a new trilogy and succeeds in presenting an interesting world that I want to know more about. A world that nature has taken back from humans and where the Legend of Caesar takes on a life of its own and is subjected to new interpretations. The apes, as a product of our failure, slowly tread our path, but have the ruins of our triumphs in their sights, which they want for themselves. I wonder where they'll take it. I'm sorry the smart people haven't disappeared. I'm waiting for the astronauts to arrive and visit New York. But this is missing the point.

13 Bom di Jakarta

EvilPhoEniX13 Bom di Jakarta(2023)

angol Indonesia also adds its hand this year with a decent adrenaline action flick. Angga Dwimas Sasongko is one of Indonesia's more aspiring filmmakers, but only now has he made a film that I can appreciate above average, even though his Stealing Raden Saleh has had a decent amount of success abroad. Here you can see a very decent budget and it looks like a nice A-list production, the best this country can produce. The story focuses on terrorists who cause chaos in Jakarta when they plant 13 bombs with the threat that one will explode every 8 hours, they want 100 Bitcoins as a ransom. This terrorist attack is the result of a fight against the financial mafia and oligarchs, and is quite interesting and novel. The film has a solid pace, there's always something going on and it moves forward very quickly, the action scenes are decent, it's R-rated and the shootouts have that proper military feel. Midway through the film the pace calms down a bit but the ending kicks in again, there's an unexpected twist and some knife duels as well, so a very pleasant surprise for me. I love fighting terrorists and when a decent budget is added to it, the fun is taken care of. 75%

Kényszerleszállás

EvilPhoEniXKényszerleszállás(2012)

angol I'm glad I caught up on this one. The combination of Robert Zemeckis and Denzel Washington sounded good and it worked. The opening 30 minutes with the plane crash is a decently intense beast and I liked the aftermath, the investigation and the subsequent trial where the protagonist is tried for alcohol and drugs. I had fun and Denzel was excellent as always. 75%

Godzilla -1.0

KakaGodzilla -1.0(2023)

angol Gareth Edwards wanted to revive this dramatic concept back in 2014, but the mass success of his Godzilla seems to have been broken by Hollywood dictates. Godzilla -1.0 has it a lot easier in this regard, having been made for a few bucks and in a far more Godzilla-friendly environment than the US dream factory. And the result is something the filmmakers have nothing to be ashamed of. Of course it's not the bombastic heavyweight eye-candy spectacle that the West boasts, but it has a wonderfully gripping post-WWII post-apocalyptic atmosphere, a sinister lizard that manages to wring the absolute most out of it, and even if the limit of the production budget is occasionally apparent in some shots, it works brilliantly. However, I couldn't get into the characters at all and the wistful emotional charge completely missed the mark for me. One of the few films that IMHO would have benefited from a black and white version.

Elszigetelve

NecrotongueElszigetelve(2018)

angol This movie was right up my alley. The filmmakers really pulled out all the stops and made a film zipped by like blood on an autopsy table, the story made sense, the plot was just right, the cast was solid, and I got a kick out of watching Linda's transformation. And those morgue details? Morbidly fascinating. I rarely enjoy a German thriller, but this one had me hooked. Sure, there were a few hiccups along the way, like the annoyingly clichéd finale or the landlines not working except for the one in the morgue, but I'm giving it a solid four stars. / Lesson learned: With the right motivation, you can achieve almost anything.

Le orme

LimaLe orme(1975)

angol The main thing you will take away from this film is that Vittorio Storaro (Coppola's Apocalypse Now) was a grandmaster of the camera, a GRANDMASTER! Without knowing in advance who was holding that wonderful optics machine, I immediately noticed the amazing visual compositions, of which there are many, along with the congenial atmospheric music, and in fact the whole film stands on those two components alone. That's because the plot, while maintaining an interesting mystery for two-thirds of it, isn't the strongest element, which you realize especially at the end when the final sci-fi-tinged twist is revealed and it makes you want to bang your head against the wall. This can't spoil the mood, because until then you're floating along beautifully on the seductive mystery and enjoying the gorgeous imagery. And you also notice that Florinda Bolkan has a beautiful smile, it's just a pity about the androgynous hairstyle, she looked much better with a mane with Fulci

12 Hours

EvilPhoEniX12 Hours(2022)

angol A likeable and fun action B-movie on the theme of virtual reality and the classic Battle Royale. A group of people are in the woods in a survival game, where a lot of obstacles await them (even one CGI monster). The action is decent, though drastically lacking the R-rating, but otherwise the choreography is imaginative and the fights are well shot. I was most impressed with the finale where the main character uses a katana and a knife, that's where the blood was just supposed to spurt and the twin bad guys as the final boss were fine. The potential was definitely higher, but I like this kind of genre movies and the effort is definitely there. 6/10

The Last Stop in Yuma County

EvilPhoEniXThe Last Stop in Yuma County(2023)

angol Francis Galluppi, like Sébastien Vaníček, comes through with a superb debut, and both have earned themselves a new Evil Dead. Nice. Almost everything I love in movies is here. There's the attractive setting of rural Arizona, one remote rest-stop (reminiscent of popular hixploitation movies), and a group of random people who find themselves in one place at the wrong time. There's a salesman, an attractive waitress, a pair of robbers, a couple of retirees, a Bonnie and Clyde-like couple, a young cop, and a gas station owner. Gorgeous cinematography, confident direction, a well-developed script with no shortage of twists and turns, well-chosen actors, solid dialogue, a taut atmosphere, suspense that could be sliced and a proper Mexican stand-off like something out of The Hateful Eight. The violence and humour could have been worked on better, but this mix of Tarantino and Coen evoking 70's Thrillers is more than a good genre film.8/10

Devils

NecrotongueDevils(2023)

angol My recent dive into Asian cinema has been quite the journey, prompting me to wonder, "Where will it end?" It's hard to say, especially when gems like Kim's film catch my eye and keep me thoroughly entertained. Why rush back to the familiar territory of European or American cinema filled with political correctness? The Koreans here played with my expectations, and I fell for their tricks hook, line, and sinker. Initially, I was grumbling about the apparent lameness of a Korean take on Face/Off after twenty-six years, but the creators swiftly proved me wrong, humbling my overconfidence and leaving me pondering the value of humility. However, let's not overlook the fact that the script stumbled over its own rules at times. Despite this flaw, it was an entertaining (albeit far-fetched) piece that kept me engaged throughout. None of the Korean actors overacted wildly, making for a comfortably enjoyable experience. / Lesson learned: Where physical force fails, chemistry takes over. 4*-

Odekake Kozame - Season 1

JeoffreyOdekake Kozame - Season 1(2023)

angol A delightful little mini-series perfect for the littlest viewers. If I were 3-5 years old, I'd likely be enamored with this charming shark's adventures, eagerly discovering something new in each episode and I'd probably sing along to that weird closing credits song. It turns out my inner child won't allow me to rate this little shark any lower than 6/10.

Zeusz vére - Season 1

JeoffreyZeusz vére - Season 1(2020)

angol As I used to love reading about ancient Greek myths and legends at school and repeatedly went back to read them again for years after, I did not find anything in this show very surprising, especially at the beginning. In fact, the whole basic narrative is nothing new. How about the main male protagonist, was he in any way original or interesting? Truth be told, not really... It is like a classic ancient fable, only much more fleshed out, gory and taken to crazier (and for some, probably much cooler) heights. Even so, did I find anything surprising and intriguing? Did I find something in Blood of Zeus that would make me miss it and crave the next season? I do not think so. I personally found that even the much talked about Castlevania, which is being raved about by everyone, was a bit more enjoyable than this because there was at least something surprising in every episode... The animation is fine, the soundtrack is great, although story-wise I think it is rather average. 5.5/10.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare

EvilPhoEniXThe Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare(2024)

angol While it's nothing groundbreaking, it's still a fine, stylish and entertaining Guy Ritchie film with excellent casting. The British army recruits a group of mercenaries to cause trouble for the Nazis and killing Nazis is always fun, just a shame it's not R-rated, because once Alan starts working with his knife, the blood is painfully absent. The caste acting is impressive. Henry Cavill and Jack Reacher (who gets better film by film) rule the roost, sex symbol Eiza Gonzales never gets boring, Til Schweiger as a Nazi is a delight too. It's got a very entertaining pace, nice fun and stylish action and there's plenty of it, the plot isn't great and the tension and atmosphere aren't as intense as Inglorious Basterds, but I had a good time and it's impossible not to like this bunch. 75%

A hercegnő és a sárkány

NecrotongueA hercegnő és a sárkány(2024)

angol Netflix's latest surprise left me with mixed feelings. It's evident now that fairy tales can't be approached the same way as in the old days when the world was binary and only men toted swords and wore armor. Nope, in today's progressive era, every princess is expected to save herself, even if the way she holds an axe makes it obvious that she wouldn't survive the winter. I kinda hoped our main heroine would develop a thing for the muscular blacksmith's daughter, but no such luck. The CGI was hit or miss, the psychopathic mother felt more like a manticore, and the plot didn't keep me hooked. It was just another tale of Girl Power, with occasional moments of interest but mostly a bit dull, sometimes unintentionally funny (that burnt dragon!), and not as fun as I'd hoped. The logic holes were monstrous at times; I couldn't wrap my head around how the abyss didn't spell doom for anyone. Plus, the lead actress didn't exactly light up the screen, so the slow striptease didn't do much for me. But hey, it could've been worse, like in The Princess. / Lesson learned: If you're stuck in a dark cave, keep an eye out for multipurpose worms.

Pandemonium

EvilPhoEniXPandemonium(2023)

angol How did the anticipated French horror film Pandemonium turn out? Disastrously! My eyes are playing tricks on me! I was expecting a twisted walk through hell with monsters crammed with gore and guts, a little brother to tthe Turkish Baskin and a kick-start to the French Wave this year, and I got a drama where nothing fucking happened for the whole movie. It's not until the last 10-15 minutes that the rather interesting stuff appear, but that's really late.I thought I was going to burn down a barn with my nerves (not that I had any). I don't know when the last time something pissed me off so much, an absolutely uninteresting bore that has about as much in common with horror as KFC has with shoes. In the end it turned out to be an anthology, which has no strong story arc, can't rely on any interesting scenes, script or actors and not to mention the atmosphere. The biggest disappointment of the year. 3/10. One star for the ending, the other for the mutant with the little girl, who did not do anything

A kaszkadőr

3DD!3A kaszkadőr(2024)

angol Better than Dune! Excellent, imaginative, romantic comedy with polished action and filmed with incredible flair. David Leitch reminisces about his stunt years and inspires lots of little kids to get punched, smashed and knocked down, then deepfake them into the star of the film. Ryan Gosling in The Nice Guys mode and Emily Blunt in superwoman mode are having an incredible time, and the chemistry is conjuring unicorns before your eyes.

Breakheart Pass

gudaulinBreakheart Pass(1975)

angol This western is interesting because it plays with motifs somewhat unconventional for the genre. It combines the classic western polarization of characters and life in the American West with the detective genre, and it must be said that Tom Gries did not disgrace himself. Indeed, Breakheart Pass is a film that you can enjoy if you do not subject the script to critical examination and do not worry about the plausibility of the megalomaniacal conspiracy presented by the screenwriter. It is simply an adventurous fairy tale, where you must with a wink accept numerous scriptwriting shortcuts that the creators use to aid their storytelling. The acting performances are commendable, and I must particularly praise the scene where the steam locomotive climbs steep hills and conquers ancient bridges. Overall impression: 60%.

Superman és Lois - Season 2

NinadeLSuperman és Lois - Season 2(2022)

angol The basic premise of the show is still excellent. The Kents live their lives in Smallville and raise their teenage sons. Lois works for the local Smallville Gazette. Bizarro and Lana's sister, Lucy Lane, enter the scene. The cliffhanger from the previous series is developed into the storyline of Natalie Lane Irons and John Henry Irons, characters from an alternate universe who have superhero alter egos as Steel in the comics. Yes, this is directly related to the movie Steel and the episode Heavy Metal from the series Superman: The Animated Series.
