Ben Hur, a gazdag zsidó herceg és kereskedő szívélyesen üdvözli Messalát, a Júdeába kormányzóhelyettesként visszatérő egykori barátot. Hamarosan kiderül azonban, hogy eltérő politikai nézeteik élesen szembeállítják őket. Egy szerencsétlen incidens következményeként Messala – habár meg van győződve Ben Hur ártatlanságáról – a zsidó herceget gályarabságra küldi, anyját és nővérét pedig börtönbe vetteti.
