Alisa was ten when her parents called her into the kitchen for a serious talk. They told her that her father wanted to become a girl. ‘I gasped for a moment, she says, but after the initial shock unconditional acceptance followed. As if it is the most natural thing in the world, a daughter speaks about the practical sides of her father’s transsexuality. How they agreed about a name (‘Rianne was impossible, because a girl in my class already had that name’) and how she helped him change the pitch of his voice. Amazingly casual, she buys clothes with her mother and Laura, her father, and she purchases the make-up that she puts on the counter with full ceremony, saying: ‘For Father’s day’.
