Tomáš Etzler worked for seven years as a foreign correspondent in China. He came to know a country that was developing at an admirably fast pace, was swayed by its energy, and for a moment believed that modernity could bring about political change as well. Before long, it dawned on him that many people would continue to be severely punished, and the regime would still keep most of the nation in a state of indecision and ignorance. Without neglecting that face of China today, Etzler chose to tell a story of hope in his personal documentary. Using the example of an orphanage for disabled children, he shows that the answer to collectivist brutality and ruthlessness can be mutual assistance, tolerance and empathy. angol Journalist Tomáš Etzler discovered a small islet of love in this absolutely inhumane society in the shape of a Catholic orphanage, which unfortunately no longer exists. This information that appeared in the closing credits touched me deeply. The whole documentary is extremely emotionally charged and I was very impressed. I would say the most devastating is the footage of a woman being hit by a car at a pedestrian crossing. She lay there for quite a long time completely unnoticed by passers-by, several times trying to get up on her own, before she was (finally!) run over by another passing vehicle... I never had any illusions about China, yet I was literally shocked by the fact that the perverse regime there seems to have brainwashed most of the population to the point where they are incapable of compassion and empathy.
