Mapping languages.This film takes us on a peculiar trip through Germany’s linguistic landscapes. Whilst travelling through the different regions, we are not only overcoming physical distances and crossing the boundaries between landscapes: we are crossing the boundaries between dialects. The linguistic atlas is our guide. In Germany, there are more than 3 words for butcher and one and the same sentence can be said in thousands of different ways. This film explores the different words, sounds and speech melodies to be found as you cross the land. As early as 1876, the linguist Georg Wenkler studied the geography of dialects, reinventing a map of Germany based on linguistic borders. On this acoustic tour of Germany, we experience the combination of language and landscape into linguistic landscape. Let your ears travel! (DOK.fest München)
