In Februari and March of this year the largest demonstrations and strikes ever in the history of the Soviet Union took place in Armenia. The immediate cause for it was the demand of Berg Karabach, an autonomous area in Aserbeidjan, to be administratively accounted Armenian territory. For the last eight months the international media have paid attention to the poltical disturbances in this area. Hardly any pictures are available because the region has been declared banned territory for all foreigners. The recordings, altogether seventeen hours of film, from which this documentary originates, were secretly made under very trying and perilous conditions in Karabach and Erewan. The footage that was smuggled out to the west make up a unique and rare document about the situation in this area and have as yet not been shown in their entire length (German ARD television showed a very small part of this documentary on 29 May 1988). The material was filmed with amateur equipment, and is therefore of a lesser technical quality. (International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam)
