Would You Rather

Would You Rather owes its title to the famous game in which someone is given an apparently absurd choice. “Would you rather have water or milk? See the world in blue or pink? Keep the film going or finish it?” Here are a few choices given to the collection of heterogeneous characters who pass in front of Laura Marques' camera: children who very seriously consider the subject of ice cream or the colour of the sea, people disguised as mythological characters who invent a sign language to express themselves, the director herself… Unlike the leitmotif of Herman Melville's character Bartleby, the film accepts frontality, self-imposed rules, and the idea that we must always have a preference for something. With this gesture, which we could situate between performance and burlesque film, the construction of the cinematic account is challenged. Marques questions the random aspect that is inherent to artistic creation, as well as her own role as a filmmaker. Perhaps filmmaking is nothing more than a children's game. (Visions du Réel)
