Bajo el limpido azúl de tu cielo

In Costa Rica, many stories are going around about the mythical ‘la llorona‘. This is the spirit of a gorgeous young woman who, to protect her honour and that of her family, drowned her newborn baby in a river and since then is wandering along river banks, weeping with grief. That the story of this ‘llorona‘, despite all the manly language about the blessings of motherhood used in Bajo el límpido azul de tu cielo, has more than just a mythological significance is clear from the distressed accounts by young women – often still teenagers – who have killed their babies. Notwithstanding the severe jail sentences they are facing because of that, they often see no other way out. With this documentary, filmmakers Felipe Cordero and Hilda Hidalgo graduated from the film academy in Cuba. (International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam)
