Fifty-something former miner Jaroslav has always dreamt of a career as a race car driver. In a congenial and jovial manner, he represents not only the charms and struggles (especially economic) of southeastern Moravia, but also the ever more visible chasm between city and countryside. An uncommonly charismatic portrait of a man struggling with the traumas of the past who, with disarming directness, clings to the promise of good luck and a dignified life alongside a new partner. I’ve never seen a more fascinating documentary. It lays bare the life of its characters to the core and kind of gives them a chance to get to know themselves. Madam Jiřina (probably my favorite character) comments on individual situations incredibly accurately, but the fifty-year-old Jaroslav and his girlfriend Jitka are no match for her. This is a sociological probe unprecedented in this country. And it’s all packaged with hard-hitting music. Although I do not share the same world view with Jaroslav, I admit that some of his observations and opinions are not far from the truth. (85%)
