Egy gyilkos számára nincs hétvége, akkor is dolgozik, így szegény Hercule Poirotnak alaposan meg kell tornásztatnia agytekervényeit, pedig eredetileg csak vendégségbe indult Sir Henry Angkatell vidéki birtokára. Persze a belga mesterdetektív imádja a kihívásokat. A rejtély most is (majdnem) megfejthetetlen. A vendégek között ott van John Cristow, a jóképű orvos a kissé naív és bugyuta feleségével, Gerdával. Amikor a férjre holtan találnak, felmerül a kérdés, hogy vajon miféle kapcsolat lehetett John és Henrietta, a csinos és vonzó színésznő között? Poirot hamar felfedi a szerelmi háromszög rejtélyét, de vajon egy féltékenységből elkövetett bűntényről lehet szó, vagy ismét szövevényes hazugságok hálójába keveredett? Az úszómedence, egy doboz gyufa és mindenféle lőfegyverek fura halmazából végül mégis kikerekedik az igazság... (Fantasy Film)

An excellent demonstration of the old English detective school. The typical model with a country house and an aristocratic family who gets involved in the murder of the husband of one of her members. We have seen the pattern a few times where suspicion points to everyone and the killer can only be the one who's the only one standing outside, but as before, it works wonderfully. Even more than usual, Poirot is driven by a desire to prove that his brain has no competition. Langton's film explores to some extent the conflict between detective logic and creative thinking. And as usual, David Suchet gives a pedantically full performance, which is enhanced by the excellent atmosphere of the case and the emotional ending.

One of those slightly weaker installments that are still immensely above average. A slightly different storytelling style was chosen, and the story tries to be somewhat more action-packed, more interesting, and more inventive towards the end. It manages to do so to a certain extent, although not perfectly. It's as if the viewer missed out on something. The film has a very long introduction, which might be slightly detrimental.
