Carina Cuanna is a 22 year-old Dutch woman studying Anthropology. She arrives in Turkey in June 1993, in order to write her thesis "The Role of Women in Turkish Society". Her friend Maryze would do research about Turkish women living in The Netherlands. After five months, they would compare their data and complete the thesis. They meet Mr. Rahmi, an official in the Foreigners Division. Mr. Rahmi talks to his family and sends Carina to Ankara to stay with his family. The family has lived in The Netherlands before, so Carina fits in well and starts having a good time. A few days later, she meets the family's nieces Yasemin and Asuman. The two sisters are getting ready for the 4th annual Pir Sultan Abdal celebration day organizations, which would be held in Sivas in 10 days. Carina becomes curious about Yasemin and Asuman's work and spends most of her time with them. She takes notes, starts interviewing people. Everything is going well. When the time comes, Carina leaves for Sivas with her friends. They arrive in Sivas on July 1st. Carina takes photographs and meets the attendees. Next day, on July 2nd, tensions begin to rise among the city. A group of fundamentalists use Aziz Nesin's attendance to the organization as an excuse and start a riot. They first march to the festival grounds, then to the governor's office, and to Hotel Madimak, where the attendees are accommodated. After hours of tension, the growing crowd set the hotel on fire. After remaining on the verge of death for hours; the literate people of the nation; journalists, artists, intellectuals, and Carina Cuanna, the Dutch guest whose only fault was to love Turkey, are burned to death.
