The 94-year-old Daniël Cordus, born in the Dutch East Indies, is the grandson of an African warrior who was recruited in 1837 for the Royal Dutch East-Indian Army (KNIL). 'Belanda hitam', black Dutchmen, these African KNIL soldiers were called. Their loyalty to the Dutch throne had repercussions: during the Japanese occupation, they were set to work as forced labourers. It took more than seventy years before their sacrifices were acknowledged. Griselda Molemans previously wrote a book on the subject. (Nederlands Film Festival)
