Watchmen

A downright perfect series, and I can't imagine anyone who likes Moore's book not liking this. Watchmen builds on the legendary comic (not Snyder's film) in a seamless, natural, and very clever way, and I'm not exaggerating when I write that I was impressed not only by the ingenious plot and elaborate world, but also by the way they gradually revealed it all. Until about the fifth episode, the questions of "Who, why, how, and what is he doing?" kept coming, and in the second half they gradually started to be answered;and yet there was time for everything, nothing was rushed, and surprise followed surprise until the final episode. Damon Lindelof, who conceived the entire project, has now hopefully risen in value with a lot of people, because even if he’s never managed to write a good script (which is not true, though a certain circle of viewers are convinced otherwise), Watchmen really is a masterpiece. I don’tnormally do this, but Watchmen is going to be the exception – since the series seems to be made up of interwoven stories (and also to balance out the hating a bit), I'll be reviewing it episode by episode. This first one is... great. An alternate 2019, a generation after the events of Snyder's film (the raining squids remind you of the book), a US where it is not Ronald Reagan but a completely different actor who is president, fearsome anarchists in Rorschach masks. The whole world looks very promising and well thought out, although we don't actually learn much about it, but only discover it through various hints. I liked the story a lot – of course, when it starts with a huge KKK lynching, it then logically devotes itself to the theme of racism, and if anyone is surprised or outraged by that, they probably have some personal problem and don't need to watch. The rest of us were able to enjoy a perfectly pitched story with great promise for the future. I'm really interested to see what happens next because I have a lot of questions and I’m quite happy with it. (2019.10.22)

A little slowing down after a packed first episode doesn't hurt, especially when it's really just a slowing down while the series continues to evolve. It builds directly on the first episode and once again comes up with some surprises that deepen the main heroine’s story while subtly revealing more about the world in which it takes place. Again, the storyline leads from the opening scene to the closing before the final credits, which is fine, but unlike the previous installment, this one doesn't feel like a standalone story. I liked the apartment search and the scene with Hooded Justice, but I was a little less happy with the raid on the rednecks (though I suppose that wasn't intended to be spectacular). (2019.10.29)

Another well-known character has returned, whose return is awesome, and we’ve learned something new about Ozymandias again (including confirmation that it's him, though that was probably obvious to most viewers), and with that we’ve raised at least one new question. It's also interesting that the series references the finale of the book and not the Snyder film... There are again some bits and pieces of the workings of the alternate present, which is already getting a pretty good outline, and again a perfectly constructed story – this time as a joke. It's clear that this is going to be more than a good series, right? (2019.11.06)

It's coming. It's... What? Something big. Ozymandias gets better by the episode and his initial weirdness acquires motivation and depth, the main character dives into the past and we discover it along with her, the world of the Watchmen series gets more and more elaborate. I'm really enjoying it and looking forward to each new episode. (2019.11.11)

I think it's one of the best episodes so far, if not the best altogether. It focuses on one character and explains a lot (thanks to her), but other questions remain and answers won't be far away. It's nice to see how well thought out it is, and I'm really enjoying Watchmen. I'm just curious if the President of the United States will make an appearance in a future episode. (2019.11.19)

I wrote about the last episode that it was probably the best of the bunch so far. But this one is somewhere else again – further, higher... It's one big, wonderfully shot black and white flashback with quanta of directorial ideas, a powerful surprise story that just has everything. Keep it up, the end is around two corners and it’s all fitting together very nicely. (2019.11.25)

It makes me a little sad when people refer to this show as racist... Why on earth? If it were the other way around, white people instead of black people, etc., would it be all right? However, it does bring a mischievous smile to my face that the multi-colored characters have now been joined by a blue one. Finally! (2019.12.02)

A reward for loyal viewers – this is the episode in which perhaps everything falls into place and we have no choice but to wait a week for the finale, which I'm sure will bring still more surprises. Once again, the creators won me over with their cunning time-jumping narrative and the way they naturally pieced the puzzle together piece by piece. If I didn't know Alan Moore is the way he is, I might even think he must be very happy with this series. (2019.12.09)
