(HBO Europe)

Watchmen (2019)

angol It doesn't have the cool visual poetics of Snyder's opus, of course, nor as many over-the-top cool moments, but it does flesh out the Watchmen universe and its super hero characters in a very sophisticated way, and the depiction of an alternate world past and present is equally worth highlighting. One of the few additions that has fairly deft action, lots of sci-fi cinematography, but still feels quite down-to-earth and compact thanks to a cracking script. ()

It's Summer and We're Running Out of Ice (2019) (E01)

angol It may not have the visual balls of Snyder's opus, nor the polished aesthetic and dark fictional world with its own rules, but it’s not that far. The seemingly impossible feat of picking up where Snyder left off with his film succeeded, and it's not bad at all. In places it's a nice mix of retro and modern just like a decade earlier, the effects serve the story and not the other way around, and it's quite obvious that the main building blocks of this colossus are being honoured as much as possible. It’ll be very interesting to watch the coming episodes. ()

Martial Feats of Comanche Horsemanship (2019) (E02)

angol Weaker. Not much of a Watchmen universe (except maybe the great ending), with lots of flashbacks. I'm hoping hard that this is the necessary coupling to a third episode that will move us forward dramatically. ()

She Was Killed by Space Junk (2019) (E03)

angol Slowly, little by little, more and more characters are revealed and story lines and flashbacks start to fall into place like a well-oiled machine. The series so far doesn’t put the film to shame. ()

If You Don't Like My Story, Write Your Own (2019) (E04)

angol After a stronger episode, we get a weaker one again. Watchable, actually quite OK in a wider context, the mighty Watchmen universe covers it without any problems, but it lacks the wow effect of an alternate world, stronger character development and climactic scenes. The only things worth mention are probably Jeremy Irons and his WTF world. ()

Little Fear of Lightning (2019) (E05)

angol Refined, confident, sophisticated, with a lot of threads finally coming together in a big way. ()

This Extraordinary Being (2019) (E06)

angol Almost perfect coherence between noir comic book art and cleverly made popcorn fodder for the masses. All in an impeccably crafted package, with moments that could be framed. I'd love to see characters as well written as Snyder had, otherwise no objections. ()

An Almost Religious Awe (2019) (E07)

angol A weaker copy of the previous episode with a memorable finale and a lightly sketched supporting theme of the whole series, which surprisingly makes sense. ()

A God Walks into a Bar (2019) (E08)

angol The most sophisticated and refined episode of the whole series. The sheer joy of an "ordinary" conversation in a bar. ()

See How They Fly (2019) (E09)

angol The last few episodes are too overwrought for my taste, but there's no unexpected spin or new theme. Everything fell into place well and appropriately within the overall concept. ()
