In modern Afghanistan, Dr. Nilofar Ibrahimi is running for re-election to the Afghan Parliament in her province, currently under siege by the Taliban. Meanwhile, Shakila Ebrahimkhel is an investigative reporter who covers violence against women and government corruption. Both women are trying to balance their professional and family lives despite threats of violence. Sedika Mojadidi has a complicated relationship with her birth country and brings this awareness to her intimate and moving documentary. Mojadidi’s camera is attentive, capturing the delicate balancing act of motherhood and professional duty as the director stays alongside her subjects even amid danger and sorrow. Despite the tumultuous climate in Afghanistan after international withdrawal, these women are clear about their love of country, determined to make better futures for their children while giving voice to those victimized.
