The brutal 1995 murder of 17-year-old Birgitte Tengs is among the most famous murder cases in Norwegian history. Birgitte’s cousin was charged for the murder, and confessed after draining interrogations and weeks of solitary confinement. He later retracted his confession. In a surprising turn of events, the young man was exonerated in court, yet still sentenced to pay compensation to Birgitte’s parents. In the years since the case, Norwegian police has received severe criticism for the interrogation methods in particular, and the investigation in general. To this day, we still do not know who killed the teenage girl just a few hundred meters from her family’s home. (The Norwegian International Film Festival)
