The genre of crime film and related themes of crime, investigation, corruption and conspiracy were always close to young Czech director Radim Svoboda. His latest film Cornelia, with which he successfully completed his master’s degree in direction and screenwriting at the Studio of Audiovisual Arts at the Faculty of Multimedia Communications at Tomas Bata University in Zlín, is no different. The leading actor of the Brno theater Husa na provázku and Svoboda’s prominent co-worker Dominik Teleky portrays the role of police investigator Adam Tománek, who works with his father-in-law on a case of fraud connected with the corrupted company Cornelia. However, due to personal failure, the young lieutenant gets more involved in the case than he would have wanted, and a big noose is starting to pull tight around his neck. The film, located in the winter exteriors of Baťa’s Zlín, is characterized by chilly atmosphere similar to Nordic noirs, which served as models to Radim Svoboda. (Noir Film Festival)
