Instead of Arkhipovka, a village lost somewhere deep in the neck of the woods, you can imagine just any other Russian village with a similar name and from just any other epoch. For the Russian village is everlasting: it is a parallel world where the signs of modernity have a very special, unpredicted effect. “Archipelago” is a tragic farce, a film-research. It is a knot of Russian people being an object and subject of the national literature, its hero and its maker and even the literature itself, - where the question “what comes first, a hen or an egg” still remains hovering in the air… (Россфильм)
