Instead of Arkhipovka, a village lost somewhere deep in the neck of the woods, you can imagine just any other Russian village with a similar name and from just any other epoch. For the Russian village is everlasting: it is a parallel world where the signs of modernity have a very special, unpredicted effect. “Archipelago” is a tragic farce, a film-research.
