Derry Girls (2018)

angol The quality of Derry Girls had an increasing tendency unlike many other shows. While Season 1 still had its awkward moments, Season 2 was already on track, and Season 3 didn’t spoil my good impression in any way. What I find strange is that all three of my favorite characters were actually supporting roles, and I liked them from the opening episodes to the very end. The central five were a good combination of characters, but they just couldn't compare to Sister Michael, Garry, and Joe. Those three set the bar high and never once lowered it. The show perfectly blends humor with some pretty serious matters, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. / Lesson learned: Politics, religion, war. Can they be used to make an equation? ()

Season 1 (2018) (S01)

angol After the first season of a series about the life of Catholics in Northern Ireland, I was quite happy with the show, but I still can't shake the feeling that the creators could have done better. Half of the season lacked edge. It's a shame, because the other three episodes were really enjoyable. The lead characters are Catholic school girls (and James), but all three of my favorite characters were adult roles. Besides Sister Michael, it was Grandpa Joe and Da Gerry. I really enjoyed their scenes together. ()

Episode 1 (2018) (S01E01)

angol Basically, I didn't know what I was getting into, so the opening part pleasantly surprised me with its 90s retro atmosphere, it was really nice. Although... People from Northern Ireland may perceive it a little differently. Throughout the whole time, I was smiling three stars, but in the end, I appreciated the crunch fully, so I had to add a fourth piece as well. ()

Episode 2 (2018) (S01E02)

angol It seems that the opening episode was just a kind of introduction, the fast food-like second episode made me laugh from Sister Michael's speech onwards, but above all, it allowed me to understand the hierarchical division in Erin's family. Besides having a great time, I also have three favorite characters, so I'm satisfied. ()

Episode 3 (2018) (S01E03)

angol In the previous comment, I apparently expressed too much excitement, so I was immediately brought back down to earth to snap out of it. I'm not saying that I didn't enjoy the third episode, but it was more about only being able to laugh at certain moments, definitely not as fun as before. ()

Episode 4 (2018) (S01E04)

angol Children from Chernobyl and another great opening speech by Sister Michael, I immediately sensed that I would enjoy the fourth episode. And I was not mistaken. The creators managed to blend both storylines (party, family) successfully and infused a sufficient amount of good humor into both. ()

Episode 5 (2018) (S01E05)

angol My ratings of individual episodes resemble a sinusoid, while the introduction of the fourth part hinted that I could be satisfied. However, the subplot with the IRA supporter somehow didn't appeal to me, and the best moments definitely came from the interactions between Grandpa Joe and Gerry. But even these two couldn't carry it alone. ()

Episode 6 (2018) (S01E06)

angol Well, this was quite disappointing. Since the finale of the first season, I was expecting something more, and while there was humor, it was very sparingly used, and that's a pity. I have a feeling that the creators of the series really let me down; according to the previously precise satisfaction curve, I should have gotten an excellent episode... ()

Season 2 (2019) (S02)

angol I’ve recently seen an interview with an actress about a show she was in that was getting a lot of crap. She said that everything does unless it’s a Netflix or HBO series. And I wonder if it might not also have something to do with quality and content. I personally couldn’t care less who is behind which series. The only important factor for me is whether I’m having fun or not. And I usually have a great time watching Derry Girls. The quality has gone up compared to the first season, so I expect to be entertained by Season 3 as well. ()

Across the Barricade (2019) (S02E01)

angol The first episode of the second season brought me mixed feelings. On one hand, I had quite a good time, but at the same time, there were not lacking weaker moments with a touch of awkwardness. It was a mediocre episode that was at least lifted slightly by the presence of sister Michael. ()

Ms De Brún and the Child of Prague (2019) (S02E02)

angol Another great speech by Sister Michael at the beginning of the episode suggested that I might like the episode, and it turned out to be true because I didn't experience any unpleasant surprises. At times, it reminded me of the movie Bad Teacher and I had a great time visiting the cinema and trying to figure out who Keyser Söze was afterwards. ()

The Concert (2019) (S02E03)

angol Okay then, I already got the topic of the episode - a trip to the Take That concert in Belfast:-) I just didn't expect the creators to turn it into a road movie with so many obstacles. I doubt that I would be able to enjoy the concert of my favorite band if I had to worry about a polar bear breathing down my neck. ()

The Curse (2019) (S02E04)

angol In this case, I didn't hesitate at all, the fourth episode was great from the very beginning to the very end. The creators ensured it with the viewers - those who don't like weddings got a chance to mournful gatherings, and I democratically enjoyed both. I'm glad Gerry could express himself a bit more, and I had a great time. ()

The Prom (2019) (S02E05)

angol It's strange, but I actually enjoyed myself more at Aunt Birdie's memorial gathering than at the graduation party, even though it ended the way every graduation party should. I really didn't expect to have such a good time, with the girls choosing their dresses and the TV... ()

The President (2019) (S02E06)

angol Every time the creators give more space to the duo Joe/Gerry, I have the certainty that I will have a lot of fun, and this time was no exception. Thanks to the episode about welcoming the president, I found out that Bill is not like Bill, that Chelsea probably doesn't handle chlorine well in her eyes, and that when you hold your ground instead of being friends, there's no time to figure out who is who. ()

Season 3 (2022) (S03)

angol The third season of Derry Girls had me hooked – didn't even realize how much I missed them. The individual episodes had me cracking up big time, and I love a good laugh, so the final grade was a no-brainer. But here's the bummer – finding out I won't be heading back to Derry anymore left me a bit disappointed. / Lesson learned: Nothing lasts forever. ()

The Night Before (2022) (S03E01)

angol I had to give this episode five stars because I'd missed the girls like crazy. The plot was hilarious. After the hiatus, it hit me again that humor isn't just about the main crew; the supporting characters, like Sister Michael, Gerry, and Joe, bring the laughs, too. It's awesome having them all back. / Lesson learned: Work might better you, but it can also drag you into some sticky situations. ()

The Affair (2022) (S03E02)

angol The second episode was even better than the first one. All the characters owned the screen space, and I swear, and gave me many a chuckle. Even the supporting characters did an excellent job of keeping me entertained. / Lesson learned: Don't give in to temptation. At least not too often. ()

Stranger on a Train (2022) (S03E03)

angol Okay, it's crystal clear now – Season 3's got some serious potential. Every episode's been a hit so far. The third episode, with its rail trip, had a pretty crazy plot. The main five characters stole the spotlight, overshadowing the other family members, even Sister Michael and that's saying something. / Lesson learned: Don't steal food form other people's luggage. ()

The Haunting (2022) (S03E04)

angol This episode left me a tad disappointed. I was expecting an epic experience with such a promising title, but it didn't quite hit the mark. Don't get me wrong, the fourth episode had its funny moments, but compared to what Season 3's been serving up, it brought the least laughs. Still, some moments were priceless. / Lesson learned: Double-check the address. ()
