The joy of motherhood for Varya is overshadowed by tragedy when her newborn son becomes seriously ill and needs urgent and expensive surgery. Kirill, a high-ranking official, with whom Varya had, until recently, a painful and long drawn-out love affair, refuses to acknowledge his paternity and help to save the baby’s life. Varya faces a dramatic choice: to abandon her son and place him in the care of the family of her rich - and current - lover, where he will receive a full and proper treatment, or to try and struggle on her own to the end. But in the last case, even Yaroslav, the doctor at the maternity home - and her only reliable support - cannot guarantee that the baby will survive. (Star Media)
