Vlad III, Prince of Wallachia (present day Romania) in the 15th century, is said to be the model for the novel's character Dracula. Because of his cruel behaviors, he was called Vlad the Impaler. Wallachia at that time was caught between East and West, Islam and Christianity. In order to protect his small country, Vlad created an image of himself as a thoroughly terrifying king to enemy countries and rebels.
